What an SEO migration plan should protect

A migration can change how search engines discover, render and understand your most valuable pages. The job is to preserve the signals that already work, map genuine URL changes accurately and monitor what happens after launch. This checklist helps organize that work; it does not replace a crawl of the existing and staging sites.

  • Important URLs: capture the pages that receive organic visits, links and conversions before making changes.
  • Search signals: compare titles, headings, canonicals, internal links, indexability and structured data between old and new versions.
  • Redirects: map changed URLs to the most relevant live destination rather than sending everything to the homepage.
  • Measurement: annotate launch timing and compare Search Console and analytics performance at page level.

Frequently asked questions

Will changing my CMS automatically hurt rankings?

No. The SEO risk comes from changes to URLs, content, internal links, rendering, indexability and other signals. Plan and test those changes before launch.

Do I need redirects for every page?

You need redirects for URLs that change or disappear when there is a genuinely relevant destination. URLs that stay the same do not need a redirect solely because the design changes.

Does this tool crawl my website?

No. It creates a checklist from your answers. A full migration audit needs live and staging crawls, analytics and Search Console access.

How long should I monitor after launch?

Review critical errors immediately, then compare indexing and page/query performance over the following weeks. The right period depends on site size and crawl frequency.
