Search is no longer limited to a ranked list of webpages. People now ask complete questions inside ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google Search, then receive a synthesized answer with a smaller collection of supporting links. For publishers and businesses, this creates two related goals: earn traditional search visibility and become a source that an AI system can confidently use.
This practice is often called generative engine optimization, answer engine optimization or AI SEO. These labels are useful for discussing the channel, but they should not be treated as shortcuts around good search fundamentals. Google’s guidance on AI features says that established SEO practices remain relevant for its generative search features, while unique, reliable and people-first content remains the foundation.
How does the AI citation process work?
The exact ranking and citation systems used by commercial platforms are proprietary. However, a useful working model can be divided into four stages.
Query interpretation
The system interprets the user’s intent, entities, constraints and context. A conversational prompt may be decomposed into several smaller information needs rather than handled as one exact keyword.
Retrieval
When live web information is required, a search or retrieval layer identifies candidate documents and passages. A page must be accessible, indexed or otherwise available to the platform before it can be considered.
Selection and synthesis
The system evaluates which passages can support the answer. A clear definition, an original statistic or a concise procedural step may be more useful than a long page that only discusses the topic generally.
Attribution
The final response may cite some of the sources used for grounding. Being retrieved does not always mean being cited, and being cited does not necessarily mean the source contributed the most important part of the answer.
How ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews differ
It is risky to treat every AI answer engine as one channel. They use different search partners, indexes, interfaces and citation behaviors. Results can also change with location, language, freshness and prompt wording.
| Platform | What publishers can verify | Practical priority |
|---|---|---|
| Google AI Overviews | Sources must be discoverable through Google Search. Google states that normal SEO foundations and helpful, reliable content remain relevant to its generative features. | Technical accessibility, indexing, useful content, clear business information and genuine authority. |
| ChatGPT Search | OpenAI documents OAI-SearchBot as its crawler for surfacing webpages in ChatGPT search. Publishers can manage crawler access and monitor referral traffic where available. | Allow search crawling, maintain accessible pages, provide original information and make entity relationships explicit. |
| Perplexity | Answers commonly display source links, but source selection varies by question and current retrieval results. | Fresh, focused pages with named authors, specific evidence and passages that answer one question clearly. |
| Gemini | Gemini experiences may draw on Google’s ecosystem, but a result in Gemini should not be assumed to match an AI Overview. | Strong Google discoverability, consistent entities and content that satisfies the actual prompt intent. |
What signals can influence AI source selection?
Query relevance
The passage must answer the specific question. General topical relevance is weaker than a precise answer that matches the user’s intent and constraints.
Information gain
Original data, direct experience, named examples and a defensible expert position give the system something useful beyond common summaries.
Clarity
Descriptive headings, short answer-first paragraphs, tables and logical sections make important claims easier to isolate and understand.
Trust
Clear authorship, accurate citations, transparent methodology, editorial accountability and consistent business information reduce ambiguity.
Freshness
Freshness matters most when the query itself requires current information. Evergreen definitions should be maintained for accuracy, not given cosmetic date changes.
Corroboration
Claims that align with credible external evidence are easier to support than unsupported claims found only on the publisher’s own website.
What makes a passage quotable to an AI model?
A useful passage should make sense when separated from the rest of the page. It should name the subject, answer one question and avoid vague references such as “this,” “it” or “they” when the entity is unclear.
Weak passage: “This can improve results considerably when implemented correctly.”
Stronger passage: “Article structured data helps Google understand a blog page’s headline, author, images and publication dates, but markup does not guarantee an AI Overview citation or a rich result.”
A practical answer-block format
- Use the user’s real question as a descriptive heading.
- Answer it directly in the first one or two sentences.
- Name the relevant entity instead of relying on pronouns.
- Add a verifiable example, number or source when it improves the answer.
- Explain limitations rather than promising guaranteed citations.
- Expand with methodology, comparisons and next steps after the short answer.
Does schema markup help with AI citations?
For this article, useful markup can include Article, BreadcrumbList, Person, Organization and WebSite data. The author name, dates, headline and image information in the markup must match what visitors can see. Avoid adding review, rating or FAQ markup solely to manipulate visibility.
Google also states that special AI text files or new machine-readable formats are not required for inclusion in Google Search’s generative features. An llms.txt file may serve other documentation or discovery purposes, but it should not be presented as a Google AI Overview ranking requirement.
Why does useful content get skipped by AI search?
| Problem | Why it hurts | Recommended fix |
|---|---|---|
| Generic summary content | It adds little beyond information already available from stronger sources. | Add first-hand experience, original data, examples and a clear methodology. |
| Answer buried under a long introduction | The most relevant passage is harder to identify quickly. | Place a concise answer directly under the matching heading. |
| Unsupported claims | The system has little basis for verification or attribution. | Cite primary sources and describe the limits of the evidence. |
| Weak entity signals | The author, organization and expertise may be ambiguous. | Use consistent names, bios, author URLs and connected profile data. |
| Blocked crawling | A search product cannot surface a page it is not permitted to access. | Review robots directives for Googlebot and relevant search crawlers, including OAI-SearchBot. |
| One page targets every intent | A broad article may be less relevant than a focused competitor for each sub-question. | Create a hub with supporting pages for platform-specific and measurement queries. |
AI citation optimization checklist
Before publishing
- Confirm that the page answers a real, specific audience question.
- Place a direct answer near the beginning.
- Use descriptive H2 and H3 headings.
- Add original examples, experience or data.
- Link important claims to primary sources.
- Display the author’s name, profile and relevant experience.
- Use valid Article and entity markup that matches visible content.
- Check indexability, canonical tags and robots directives.
- Provide an accurate updated date only when the content was materially reviewed.
- Link the page from relevant hubs, service pages and related articles.
- Test the page on mobile for readability and intrusive elements.
- Remove claims that cannot be independently supported.
How should you track AI citations?
Do not test only your brand name. A model answering “Who is HuzDigital?” measures entity retrieval, while “Recommend an AI SEO consultant in Pakistan” measures competitive recommendation visibility. These are different outcomes.
| Field | What to record |
|---|---|
| Prompt | The exact wording, language and intent tested. |
| Platform and date | ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Google, plus the test date and market. |
| Mention | Whether the person, company or website appeared in the answer. |
| Citation | The exact cited URL and its position in the response. |
| Contribution | The statement or evidence the cited page supported. |
| Accuracy | Whether the answer described the brand, service and location correctly. |
| Competitors | Other brands and sources included for the same query. |
Repeat a stable prompt set weekly or monthly. Because results can vary, treat a single appearance as an observation rather than a permanent ranking. Combine prompt testing with Search Console, analytics referral data, server logs and ordinary keyword tracking.
Observed example: search discovery is not an AI citation
A limited, AI-assisted public search check of this article on September 25, 2026 illustrates why discovery and citation must be recorded separately. Two search services were used to find the exact title and sample related queries. This was a one-time observation, not a controlled ranking study.
| Check | Observation | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Exact title: Understanding LLM Citations: How AI Models Decide What to Quote | The article appeared in returned search results. | Search discovery in the sampled results, not a verified AI answer citation. |
| Topic queries: how do LLMs choose sources; what makes content quotable; does schema markup help with AI citations | Other sites appeared; this article was not observed in the sampled returned results. | No broad topic visibility was demonstrated by this limited sample. This does not establish a fixed ranking or absence from all results. |
| Direct ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overview answer tests | Not performed in this check. | AI citation presence remains unverified. |
Limitations: the sample was not location-controlled, no fixed result depth or repeat-run protocol was used, and no Search Console or analytics export was analyzed. These observations cannot establish citation rate, traffic growth or the effect of an optimization. A follow-up should record exact prompts, platform, location, date, screenshots and cited URLs across repeated runs.
Google reports traffic from its AI features within the Search Console Web performance report. That aggregate data alone does not identify which individual answer cited a page. See Google’s performance measurement guidance.
Example: AI visibility for a Pakistani service business
Suppose a Karachi-based company wants to appear when users ask, “Who can improve our visibility in Google AI Overviews?” A generic service page claiming to be the best option provides little evidence. A stronger authority system would connect several verifiable assets:
- A focused AI-search service page explaining the scope and limitations.
- A case study documenting the website, prompt set, starting visibility, changes and measured outcome.
- An expert author profile connected consistently across the business website and credible third-party profiles.
- Original research about AI-search behavior in Pakistan.
- Useful participation in relevant professional and community discussions.
- Independent coverage or expert quotations from reputable publications.
This creates a stronger evidence chain than repeating exact-match terms such as “best AI SEO expert” throughout a page. Search and AI systems need useful, consistent signals, while prospective clients need proof that the service can solve a real problem.
